Transmission Fluid Level Check:
The fluid should be checked at least once a month. In most vehicles this should be done with the vehicle in park; check your owner's manual or the dipstick, with engine warm. The fluid is checked for, 1) level, 2) color, and 3) smell. Good transmission fluid is red in color, odorless and should read full on the dipstick. A low fluid level indicates a transmission leak - in this case fill fluid to the proper level and have the transmission checked for leaks. Remember driving with low fluid levels damages the transmission.

Tips to Remember:
1.

Always come to a full stop before changing the transmission from reverse to drive and vice versa.

2.
Never tow or permit the vehicle to be towed on its "drive wheels" for more than five miles.
3.
When parking a vehicle at an incline, engage the emergency brake before putting the transmission in park.
4.
A majority of automatic transmission damage is done by heat. If you tow with your vehicle, consider installing an external transmission cooler.
5.
If stuck in mud, do not "rock" your vehicle. Either get it towed or dig out the vehicle. If you have to rock the vehicle, let the wheels stop before changing direction of motion.

Choosing a Transmission Repair Facility:
Visit the facility and talk to the person you will be dealing with. Ascertain their professionalism, reputation, quality of work and technical expertise. Remember a good repair facility will be:
A.
Proud of their workmanship and professionalism.
B.
Should be technically sound and own the equipment it takes to service vehicles.
C.
Premises should be clean and visual aids should be available.
D.
Should tell you the warranty they give on the work required.

Automatic transmission is the most complex component in the vehicle, containing several hundred moving parts. A good business will need to check the transmission before giving you a diagnosis and a price.
